Sometimes a character does something so bad or many things so bad, that you wonder how he will ever come back from that. Those tend to be the big writing challenges and the characters you end up loving the most.

Such is the case with Malcolm from my Black cougar trilogy. He’s done some pretty bad stuff. More than once and I wasn’t sure I could do his story justice. But I sat down and wrote the book and cried like a baby when I ripped his heart out and stompted on it. So lest you think he didn’t pay for his sins…he does.

This excerpt might be a bit of a spoiler but its the first really bad thing he did and the one that would torment him for a very long time.

Excerpt from Malcolm: Chey has had to reunite with Malcolm for the greater good and this is the memory that she is reliving that forever changed both their futures. It’s dark and it’s heartbreaking, but it’s real. Just as life often is.

On the drive back to Malcolm’s house at the edge of the Nantahala national forest, Chey’s skin crawled from doing nothing. She desperately wanted to glare at him, yell at him—hell, even jumping from the Jeep and disappearing into the early morning light just peeking over the horizon sounded good.

Arousal, anger and guilt were not a good combination and she needed some time to clear her head. It was the arousal more than anything that puzzled her. Her body burned for a man that was, for all intents and purposes, a criminal. The profile she’d compiled on him over the years spoke of a rebellious but loyal teenager who’d worshipped his mother. After she died, things began to change. For one, he’d met her. Unfortunately, she remembered the day as clearly as if it had been yesterday, not five years ago.

She’d crossed over into his clan’s territory on a dare and he’d hunted her. From the moment she’d scented him something shifted inside her. His presence tugged continuously at her mind. However, fear of a black cougar had practically been bred in her so she raced back to the neutral zone where she belonged. That first day she’d not seen him, but she’d known he watched her from somewhere close by. His scent enthralled her.

Chey’d returned every single night, playing chicken with a Death Enforcer. Until one night, he’d decided to capture her. He’d gone from cougar to man in an instant, pouncing on her before she even blinked. Every cell in her body had lit up that night and she’d been prepared to take him as her first. They’d wrestled and fought, scratched and bit until finally Malcolm pinned her to the ground belly down.

He’d entered her from behind in one dark, fast and thrilling thrust that made her scream from the glorious pain and pleasure. Their cries of passion and lust filled the night air until they were both lost in the frenzy. Then he’d frozen above her. He’d scrambled to his feet spewing insults she’d never expected from the man she’d inexplicably trusted. He shifted back to the sleek cougar she’d been awed by and disappeared into the woods.

Left confused and hurt, she’d curled into a ball and wept. She’d lost her innocence and ability to trust that night and all she heard in her head over and over were his parting words.

Not in this lifetime or any other would he mate with a half-breed.

For more shameful moments from intriguing characters, be sure to follow the trail:

First, I’d like to thank Selena Blake, Bitten by Paranormal Romance Reviews, and Reading Between the Wines for hosting this awesome blog hop. (see below for the not-to-be-missed prizes)

Spring has definitely sprung all across the country. Many of us can attest to that through our fight with the annual pollen that drives our allergies crazy. Despite that, I love spring. It’s a clear sign of fresh and new that can be carried over into many aspects of our lives. For me this Spring has brought about the beginning of a very big change. I’m moving from North Carolina to Washington state and I’ve been going back and forth quite a bit as I find a house, help my daughter get settled into her new school, and begin the arduous process of packing up the house I have lived in for thirteen years.

It seems odd to be leaving my beloved South after so many years, but I’ve always enjoyed change and I always look forward to a new adventure. Often times my adventures take place between the pages of a book I’ve written or read but sometimes it’s necessary for me to experience adventure in my real life. It’s those times I’ve been known to make radical changes.

Join the military, travel out of the country, rock climb national parks, go white water rafting, ride in race cars, leave a safe corporate america job for self employment… You get the idea.

With so many possibilities in the air during Spring, I hope you’ll find your perfect adventure whether it be between the pages of the books you’ll be introduced to during this event or right in your own backyard.

Now let’s get to the prizes:

Selena’s grand prize is a Nook Touch with glow light! Check out her blog for her other great offerings .

I will be giving two lucky winners a digital copy of their book of choice from my entire backlist. You can see all that I have available on my books page. This includes my latest release, Vampire Awakening.

To enter to win all of these fabulous prizes simply leave me a comment and tell me what you love about Spring. (open internationally)

Happy Saturday!

Today’s theme is emotion, one of many critical aspects that make up each book. However, finding the right balance is individual to each story. For this snippet I have chosen an excerpt from Power Play which is probably one of the most intensely emotional stories I’ve written. The scene below is right after Jennifer has run from the hero. Intimacy is not her strong suit and she’s really struggling with the torrent of emotions he creates in her.

Power Play has recently hit the Kindle erotica best seller list and I owe a big thanks to the readers for putting it there. Thank you!

Enjoy!

Snippet:

Jennifer stood at her car door, legs trembling and hands shaking. She needed to get in her car and drive far away from here as fast as possible. When Daegan discovered her gone, he was not going to be happy. He’d probably come looking for her, and she couldn’t face him now. Unfortunately, her body was being uncooperative. With her key at the ready, she reached for the lock, and her hand shook harder. Tears streamed down her cheeks and into her mouth and none of it mattered.

She’d run. She’d done exactly what he said she would. Her head buzzed with the words he’d spoken the night before. Disappointment slashed deep.

So what. She didn’t owe him a thing. She’d agreed to his offer in the heat of the moment before she’d had time to think about it. It wasn’t like her to make spur-of-the-moment decisions. Over the years, she’d learned to carefully consider all of her options and not rush into anything with the potential to backfire on her. Jennifer laughed through the tears. What a joke. She was like her mother always said. Fickle.

“One minute you want one thing, and the next it’s something else. Which one is it, Jennifer?”

She heard her mother’s voice in her head as if it’d been yesterday, not a decade ago. How long had it been since she’d talked to her mother? A sob sounded in her throat. She had to get out of there before someone found her like this. She tried again to put the key in the lock, and the keys slipped from her hand.

“Fuck!”

Jennifer slid to the ground and plopped on her butt. She couldn’t drive across town like this. Maybe she could hide in the studio until she got herself under control. Yeah right. The minute Daegan found her car in the parking lot, the first place he’d look was the stupid studio. Thanks to his role as contractor, he had access to the entire building. There was nowhere for her to go. With trembling hands she fished her cell phone out of her purse and turned it on.

Who are you going to call?

She had no one. Story of her fucked-up life. For now her life consisted of her career. Friends were hard to come by, but she kind of had a few. She considered Chase and Murphy her friends, even if they’d betrayed her with that asshole and allowed him to say she couldn’t work. Jennifer swiped at the tears that continued to flow. There’d be no talking to them. She’d watched them interact with Eve when they didn’t realize she was looking. Her friend submitted to them on a level she couldn’t comprehend. No matter what they asked for, she gave willingly. And with a smile on her face. Hell, the woman practically glowed.

Eve. That’s it. She jerked open the cell phone and dialed the number she knew by heart before she had a chance to change her mind.

On the fourth ring, Jennifer’s hope wilted. Not available. Then Eve answered.

“It’s-a-Jennifer,” she spat, knowing there was no way to hide her distress.

“What’s wrong? Are you all right? You sound like you’re crying.”

Regret lanced through Jennifer. This was a dumb idea. She began to pull the phone away from her ear and disconnect.

“Don’t you dare hang up on me, young lady. Where are you?” The demand in Eve’s voice startled her. She’d never heard the other woman talk like that before.

“Downstairs,” she whispered.

“Good, don’t move. Seriously, if you don’t wait for me, I’ll have Murphy track you down and whip your hide. You know he’ll do it.”

Jennifer nodded her head and felt a ghost of a smile cross her face. “Okay,” she mumbled. “I’m in the parking lot.” She folded the phone and pushed it into her pocket. She had about two minutes before Eve found her, and she didn’t know what to do. There’d be no hiding the tears or getting cleaned up. With one last glance at her car and her only chance for escape, she turned and shuffled back toward the building.

Eve burst through the door, and all the emotion inside Jennifer boiled over. “I tried to run,” she blurted.

Her friend wrapped her arms around her. “Of course you did, sweetie.”

She held up her shaking hands. “Fingers wouldn’t work. Can barely hold the keys.” She knew the words tumbling from her mouth made little sense, but they were the best she could do at the moment.

“Come back inside, and you can tell me what happened.” Eve ushered her through the front door and steered her in the direction of the studio. “In here.” She pointed to Chase’s private office, and Jennifer hesitated.

“Don’t worry. Chase and Murphy aren’t here.”

“But Daegan—”

“Won’t dare come in here without an invitation. Trust me.”

Trust her. Eve had no idea how foreign those words were to her. And what the hell was up with everyone today pushing her to trust them?

Be sure to follow the trail for more snippetty goodness!

I think my favorite that I did for my oldest daughter (who left for college this week. *sniff*) was the time I drove and rounded up her friends at 5:30 am before school so we could all gather in her room and scare err I mean wake her up with a shocking early morning birthday breakfast. And I think if you asked her it would probably be her most memorable.

My youngest daughter has a birthday coming up in about ten days and when I asked her what she wanted to do for her birthday she said “nothing.”

Whaaatttt?!?!?!

Nothing! I can’t do nothing. Time to get out the devious mom hat and start planning something good wouldn’t you say?

As for my own birthdays, these days I tend to want to do something from my bucket list. (don’t we all?) This year I’m going a little crazy. My birthday is this summer and I’m packing up and moving my entire family across the country to somewhere completely different from where we’ve lived all our lives. Time for change. *g* (and new adventures)

Viva la birthday!

By the way:

If you hadn’t heard, I had a new release last week and I’m dying to share it with you. Smoking hot vampire anyone?

The truth may set her free but there’s no guarantee she’ll recover.

Abby Douglas has lived in the dark for six months. Until a mysterious package and a voice in a dream spark a chain of events she didn’t see coming. To futher complicate matters, a lethally stunning stranger walks into her life and awakens erotic needs inside her that run deep. Now she has to decide how much she’ll give up to unlock her memories.

Caleb Barrett, a vampire on a mission, pursues Abby while on the hunt for a homicidal vampire. Instead he’s captured by a silken voice and haunting eyes that stir an insatiable hunger. An instant connection is forged and Caleb marks her as his own with no intention of letting her go. When she runs from him all bets are off and this dead sexy cowboy will do whatever it takes to find out what secrets her mind harbors before it’s too late. Rules or no rules.

Suddenly being careful what you wish for is more than just another cliché, it’s life or death.

This books contains one sexy as sin, motorcycle riding, black leather wearing vampire with a two track mind. Sex and blood.

Now it’s your turn!

Hmm another hard choice as there are plenty to choose from. But since it is St. Patrick’s Day and I was talking about Power Play yesterday, I might as well choose a scene from there.

This scene comes later in the book. Jennifer’s gone missing and Daegan is anxiously searching for her. It’s a really long scene so this will be just a tease. Thought I’d warn you this time.

Excerpt:

Ten minutes later, he pulled into the parking lot of Purgatory and killed the engine of his car. He didn’t have to search for her car; it stood out like a fucking beacon in a sea of dark SUVs. He was going to kill her.

Inside the club, he stood to the side of the entrance and allowed his eyes to adjust to the dark interior. Music thumped from speakers surrounding the main floor of the big room. He didn’t even bother checking the dance floor. His wayward sub would be on the second floor where the play stations were located. When he reached the stairs, the club manager, Gabe, blocked his path.

“You’re looking a little pissed tonight, Daegan. What’s going on?”

“Let me pass. I’m looking for someone.”

Gabe shook his head. “Now that definitely doesn’t sound like a good idea until you calm down, my friend.”

“I’ll be perfectly fine just as soon as I find my sub.” He started to push his way up the stairs.

“Ahh. I’d heard you and Jennifer had come to an agreement. Although I have to admit it came as a total surprise. I’m not sure I’ve ever seen a more reluctant sub in my life.”

Daegan stopped and eyed Gabe warily. In the short time he’d known the man, he’d learned he had an uncanny ability to read people. “I don’t think you understand her. Sure she’s complicated, but underneath all her bluster she’s soft and far more fragile than anyone realizes.”

Gabe snorted. “I can’t say fragile is a word anyone’s used to describe her before.”

The implication that he’d discussed his sub with other Doms annoyed the hell out of him. Despite the anger, all of his protective instincts rode close to the surface, and it wouldn’t take much to provoke him. “Trust me, I know.”

The other man narrowed his eyes. “Are you sure about that? You seem like a good guy, but Jennifer has been a member here a lot longer than you have. If you aren’t willing to finish what you’ve started, then I think you should walk away now before it’s too late.”

The warning burned in Daegan’s mind. “I appreciate that your job is to protect the members here, but this time you’re wrong. I know exactly what I’m doing.”

Gabe studied him for a minute more before letting his guard down. He stepped to the side and swept his arm in the direction of the play area. “Then I suggest you check out the flogging station first.” With that, Gabe disappeared into the crowd and left him to stand and gape. With a last glance into the sea of people, Daegan pushed his way upstairs and into the overflowing play area. People were crammed into every available inch, making it difficult to see the flogging station. The sound of a whip cracking screamed through the air, accompanied by a few gasps and a delicious cry of agony when the leather tip hit flesh.

A few people glanced his way and immediately moved out of his path. When he got through enough of the crowd, what he found boiled his blood. Jennifer was being strapped to the St. Andrew’s cross by a dark-haired sub. The attendant at the station plucked a flogger from the wall and made his way toward his sub.

Mine.

“Touch that flogger to my sub’s skin and you’ll not be able to wield it again for a week,” Daegan growled in a low voice.

Several people behind him sucked in sharp breaths, and the area around him turned quiet and still except for the music coming from downstairs. Even with clothes covering her body, Daegan saw Jennifer’s back go ramrod stiff when she heard his voice. ‘That’s right, love. Busted.”

The man glared at him for a few seconds before he took a step back. He twisted the implement in his hand and offered Daegan the flogger. A dungeon master pushed through the crowd. “What’s going on? Is everything okay?”

“I need some scissors,” Daegan said.

The DM ignored him and repeated his question to the attendant.

“He claims this is his sub, and I’m guessing by the look on his face she didn’t get his permission to do this.”

The man walked to Jennifer’s side “Is this true?”

A few seconds ticked by before she nodded her head. The tension among the crowd grew palpable. She’d just damned herself to a very painful or public punishment.

The DM approached him. “Do you want me to bring the punishment box?”

“Not yet. I need a pair of scissors or a knife,” he repeated. “After, you can bring the box.”

The DM’s eyes grew wide. “As you wish, Sir.”

Everyone stayed rooted in place until one of the young women from up front arrived with a pair of scissors. The DM placed them in his hand. “You do remember the rules of the club, right? No blood.”

Daegan nodded and took the offering. He stalked toward Jennifer until he was close enough to touch. He wrapped his fingers around the back of her neck and bent toward her ear. “Have you ever heard the saying be careful what you wish for?”

She nodded.

He opened the scissors and sliced one side of her top open. The crowd behind him gasped. Oh they had no idea. She’d triggered the sadist inside, and he had every intention of making her beg for everything tonight. He continued to cut away her clothes until she lay against the cross—naked and exposed. She’d uttered not a single word of protest, and he’d lay money on how aroused she’d become.

“Do you remember your safe word, Jennifer?”

“Yes, Sir,” she whispered on a shaky breath.

“Good. You might need it.”

If you leave a comment here on this post you are not only eligible for the prizes that I am giving away but also you earn additional entries for the grand prizes of:

1) Winner’s Choice of a KINDLE FIRE or NOOK TABLET
 2) Winner’s Choice of a $90 Gift Card from Amazon or B&N

Read on to find out more!

I’ve always loved St. Patrick’s Day. Not necessarily because I can very loosely claim some Irish ancestry, but because it’s simply such a fun holiday.

In the past I’ve celebrated by attending parades, drinking green beer, and wearing a bit o green so I don’t get pinched. And sometimes purposely not wearing green so I would get pinched. (naughty me)

But my favorite celebrations of St. Patrick’s Day seemed to occur when I chose to have a little extra fun by convincing my kids that they’d been visited by the always tricky Leprechauns. I once made a magical vanilla pudding that turned green when you stirred it and told my kids that the leprechaun had come in and played magical tricks on our snack. Little did I know one of my daughters would take that to heart and get scared that a real leprechaun had been in the house. lol

After that year, I decided to keep things simple and wear our big green floppy hats and shamrock beads as we visited the local St. Pady’s Day parade. My kids are now teenagers with no real interest in trickster leprechauns or pot of gold treasure hunts so this year, I’ll don my green jacket, play some Irish music and probably make some rainbow cupcakes.

While I don’t have any St. Patrick’s Day stories to boast of, I do have a book with an Irish Dom. I have a thing for an Irish accent and couldn’t resist Daegan in Power Play if I tried. Here’s a bit about Power Play.

She wants the escape. He wants control. They both need love.

Jennifer Croft is at the peak of her career. As a bondage model at Altered Ego she’s become the crème de la crème of the fetish world, ensuring herself a top spot in her profession. The world is her oyster. Her personal life, on the other hand… It’s not pretty. Only her fascination with pain play keeps the ghosts of her past at bay.

After tragedy sends Daegan McKenna to the South for a much needed change of pace, the last thing he expects to find is a closet submissive hiding in plain sight. She’s hot-tempered and in denial — a heady combination that brings out the dominant looking for a challenge. He’s already loved and lost more than one man should, but the haunted look in her eyes prompts him to make her an offer: he’ll indulge her darkest fantasies, if she’ll agree to give up control. Then he’ll let her go.

Unfortunately the past never stays in the past and old insecurities cause complications neither of them wanted. Soon temporary power play is not enough.

Power Play is available at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, All Romance, and Sony

For prizes, I am offering one winner their choice of eBook from my entire backlist. You can see all of them at http://elizagayle/net/books and a second winner will receive a digital download of my upcoming Vampire Awakening as soon as it’s available. Just leave a comment before March 16th at 11:59 EST US time and you’re entered for both my prizes and the grand prizes!

Well, sass is one way to say it. *g* As far as I’m concerned sass makes the world go round. Maybe it’s a southern thing but I doubt it. Sassy is a universal trait. And oh so much fun.

I’m very often a smart ass in real life and that certainly comes through in many of my heroines. So today there is no shortage of books to choose from, it’s just a matter of which sassy character do I feature.

For today I’ve chosen an excerpt from Malcolm. There is sarcasm, resentment, physical violence and a whole lot of lust. The perfect combination.

Excerpt:

“Looking for me?”

He whirled at the sultry voice behind him in time for her to deliver a kick to his stomach, catching him off balance and sending him flying backward to sprawl on the floor. Air whooshed from his lungs and his head cracked against the hard floors. Pain exploded in his head, little shards of sharp, burning sensations that took hold for several long seconds before clearing.

Stunned that she’d snuck up on him, he groped for his bearings. The little minx took full advantage of his delay and pounced on top of him, straddling his legs with her own. He didn’t even see the knife until she had it pressed to his throat and dangerously close to his jugular.

“What’s wrong? Cat got your tongue?”

Malcolm slowly dragged the air back into his lungs and wondered what kind of crazy bitch she’d turned into. The power emanating from her came soaked in strength without even a whiff of fear. For a second or two, he felt frozen in time. This woman looked nothing like the Chey he remembered. This woman had obviously trained and his instincts screamed she would not be an easy fight. Interesting.

Her white blonde hair was tied up in a braid but a few strands had come loose and curled around her face. His fingers itched to brush them from her cheeks. With the anger in her eyes and the stern shape of her mouth, she reminded him more of the women from his clan than ever. In an act of aggression, she bore resemblance to the cougar more than ever.

“My tongue’s just fine, Chey. Want to find out?”

The look in her blazing eyes flared hot, shining in the moonlight as she speared him with her gaze. Electrifying pools of blue that a man could easily get lost in. All but a few shifters had green eyes and he’d only heard of one kind that had blue. He curled his lip at the memory.

The elusive white cougars.

Half-breeds that no clan wanted except for their dirty work. While he and his brothers carried out death sentences in accordance with the laws and traditions of their councils, her kind had trained for a different kind of mission. They’d become mercenaries available to the highest bidder. They used methods of stealth that he and his brothers rarely bothered with. They didn’t need to.

“In your dreams, Malcolm.”

Over the years he’d allowed his perception of her to soften. Maybe she was different. Obviously not, considering the position he now found himself in. There was nothing soft about the blade cutting into his skin, or the strength in which she pinned him with her free hand. Obviously the only emotion she’d developed outside her family was anger. It probably made her missions easier.

He growled warningly. “Then get the hell off me.”

“Or what?” Her hand tightened its vise tight grip on his arm and pinned him to the ground, a position he wanted her in right now. If he thought her scent had been enticing, that was nothing compared to the body heat infusing him as she sat atop him thinking she had

him under control. From the moment she’d set foot in his house, she’d set their course in motion. It was only a matter of time.

With her hair pinned back, he stared at the pale expanse of her bare skin like a moth to flame. His teeth ached with the need to sink into the sweet curve of her neck and taste.

Goddess, get a grip.

Clearly it had been too long. Mate or not, there was no excuse for the extreme reaction his body had toward her. If she slid back an inch or two she would know too. His raging hard on had not eased in the slightest since he’d first scented her. Not even the subtle smell of the wolf on her deterred him. Oh no, instead he hurt like fucking hell, throbbed actually from wanting her. He needed to get his little half-breed off him and now. Before he did something crazy like start shredding her clothes.

“I don’t want to hurt you… but I will.” Although he imagined his idea of hurting her and her ideas would likely differ drastically. The kind of pain he had in mind could bring the most mind numbing pleasure if given half the chance.

“I wouldn’t lay odds on that if I were you. I’m not the same woman I was all those years ago.”

“So I gather. Doesn’t change the danger. Or the warning.” The last time he’d seen her, he’d been so angry that fate had fucked them hard. He’d had a duty to his family to uphold the laws and traditions of their kind, and mating with a woman who had wolf blood in her veins would have landed them both at the receiving end of a death sentence.

“Yes, Malcolm. I haven’t forgotten a single, disgusting, hate-laden word that came out of your mouth that night. Why do you think I have a knife at your throat?”

His body tightened further at the sound of his name coming from her mouth. And what a mouth it was. Full and pink standing out against the porcelain color of her skin, lush was the word that came to mind. So pale it practically glowed. The anger running underneath meant little to the man or animal anymore.

“So you do know what you’ve started here then?”

She shrugged and scrambled off him. “I’m not here to start anything so don’t go getting crazy ideas in your head. I simply needed to make sure I had your

attention before you did anything stupid. I’m not here because I missed you. There is an actual purpose to this little surprise reunion.”

It’s that time again. Saturday means theme snippets from a great bunch of authors I’m excited to be grouped with. It wasn’t an easy choice on which story to go with so I chose one of my favorites, Whipped.

Whipped is the third book in my Purgatory series and is the only book I’ve written solely from the male point of view. Walker is sexy as hell and he finds more than he expected in Cass.

While you enjoy this snippet, I’ll be running from Zombies today as part of the Runforyourlives.com Zombie infested 5k obstacle course. lol It’s been storming so it’s going to be a good old fashioned muddy, bloody mess. You can check me out on facebook or twitter if you’d like to see pics as the day progresses.

Enjoy this scene from Whipped.

Excerpt:

The club was in full Saturday night swing as he moved slowly through the crowds around each play station. He couldn’t even get close enough to the extreme booth to see what they were currently offering up, so he turned and set off in the direction of the flogging stations.

By now his friend would be looking to take a break, but Walker wasn’t sure he was up to wielding anymore tonight. Already his groin ached enough to give him second thoughts to any offers he might receive. He could use a good dick sucking right about now.

Kat and Cindi were busy marking the hell out of a couple of subbie boys when he walked up. Their arms arched back and sprang forward with as much force as they could find. The whoosh of the air splitting for the dozens of knotted tails caught and held his attention as they connected with bare, red streaked skin.

Dex stood next to him, watching and enjoying the show those ladies loved to put on. Every male subbie in the room ate it up and no doubt wished it was them like it was nobody’s business.

“They’ve got some real pain sluts in the booth tonight,” Dex mumbled.

“That’s for sure. A little different from what you’ve got going on, huh?”

“Wait until you meet my next appointment, Cass. She’s—”

“She’s what?” A sultry sexy voice sounded behind them and both men jerked around to see.

“Why, she’s the most beautiful woman in the room, that’s what.”

“Nice save, Dex,” she murmured.

Walker stood speechless at the sight before him. Long, raven dark hair framed a narrow face, and dark eyes surrounded by thick inky lashes that watched him curiously. Her nose was ordinary but the red lips underneath drew him like a moth to flame. He lingered there watching them part slightly while her tongue darted to the edge. He felt his cock stir in his pants as his own curiosity piqued.

“Cass, here for another session, I see? Do you need to feel my flogger on your skin?” Dex teased her until she broke the look between them to turn to his friend.

“Need is overrated these days, Dex, you know that. But I can’t deny I do enjoy coming to see you on occasion. Even a girl like me enjoys a little fun now and then.”

Dex snorted and shook his head.

Walker closed his eyes and let her smoky voice float over him. There was more to what she said, he could sense it. The slight hitch in between sentences, the nervous way she moved her hands, all combined to make him curious to know who this Cass was and the story behind her.

“Well come on, sugar, you’re in luck. You’re next on my list.” He led her to his station and waited for her to get in place.

A sexy ass swayed in a tight, low-slung denim skirt when she moved. Her outfit was a far cry from the leather and PVC wear of many in the crowd, but

somehow the simplicity of denim riding low on her hips and a crisp, white cotton half-shirt leaving her midriff bare did more for him than all the big tits with their nipples covered by tiny strips of electrical tape. No, he was an ass man through and through, and the more she twitched it the more he thought about fucking it.

She had the art of teasing down to a fine science, and obviously she and Dex played this game regularly. He, however, was not a man to toy with unless you were fully prepared to follow through. He was more worked up than he had a right to be, but that didn’t change the fact his body had come to life the moment he’d heard her voice.

Walker watched her. Slender fingers lifted to the buttons of her blouse and made quick time easing them each free. His heart raced with no other explanation than excitement at something or someone new. With her hands gripping the edges of the shirt, her head tilted up and her gaze connected with his.

He easily recognized the uncertainty in her eyes as well as the caution she directed at him, but underneath those surface reactions he saw the hunger. Gut deep, aching need crying out for relief. That very look would be what he thought of later tonight when he was jacking off again.

“Did you all of a sudden develop a case of shyness, Cass?” Dex winked at her and smiled.

“Don’t be silly, I’m just enjoying the moment.” Her eyes cleared in a split second.

“Uh huh.”

She turned and faced the large St. Andrew’s Cross filling Dex’s space and jerked her shirt from her shoulders. More creamy skin and a flash of a white lace bra cupping high breasts filled his view for a few seconds before she settled her front against the smooth wood of the cross.

Besides the slim straps of her bra and the small skirt, Cass stood naked with her arms stretched above her along the lines of the wood. Walker stared,

mesmerized by the expanse of tanned skin peeking from underneath the long fall of hair that touched the tip of a tribal tattoo on her lower back. Someone else might look at her mark and refer to it as her tramp stamp, but to him it seemed sexy, even sensual.

Dex whispered at her ear, low enough so only she heard as his hands deftly buckled her wrist into the leather cuff at the top. A moan sounded from her at whatever he said and her hips wiggled against the wood. This was going to be very interesting.

This week our focus is on romance and I’ve chosen an excerpt from Burned. I tend to find romance in the smallest gestures. The automatic things that a man or woman does without even thinking about it. My all-time favorite example of that is from the In Death series where Roarke picked up a button from Eve’s jacket early in the series and has carried it in his pocket ever since. I know people probably get tired of me using that example but it’s a powerful gesture for me and has stuck with me since I began reading that series.

Enjoy this snippet from Burned:

Zane opened the door with a scowl on his face. “You’re la—.”

“I’m sorry. I lost track of time in the investigation, and when I noticed that the sun was going down I lost my balance and I fell and now I’m a crazy mess and I wanted to go home and clean up, but I didn’t want to leave you hanging any longer. Really, I’m so sorry. I thought about dinner all day long and have been looking forward to talking to you.” She heaved a sigh.

A wide smile spread across his face. “Are you done?”

Before she could answer, he put his arm around her and pulled her close.

“No. I’m fil—”

“Stop talking, Ruby.”

In an instant, his command caused some of the stress she’d been suffering to drift away. She sagged against him.

“I have the perfect solution. Come with me.”

For once in her life she didn’t argue. She let Zane lead her into his bedroom where her attention was drawn to the bed they’d occupied together less than twelve hours before. She choked back a whimper as they walked past it and into the master bathroom.

“I think you’re going to like this.”

He sat her on the edge of the giant tub dominating the room, turned on the water and then went to a panel in the wall. He pressed a button and fire erupted in the middle of the wall separating the bathroom from the bedroom.

“Whoa. I didn’t even realize that was a fireplace.”

“Uh huh. Somehow I knew you would appreciate that,” Zane said as he quickly removed her disgusting clothes.

“C’mon, climb on in.” Zane stripped and stepped in behind her. He maneuvered her around until her back rested to his front.

“Why are you being so nice to me? I showed up late and probably tracked dirt all through your condo. Is this all part of the submission game you want me to play?”

An arm tightened around her waist. “No, Ruby it’s not a game. Is it so surprising that it pleases me to care for you?” He pressed his lips to her nape. “This is just life.”

“What does that mean? I thought we were just having dinner but this feels like more than that. But how can so much change in just twenty-four hours? That’s crazy, right?”

“I’ve been waiting a while for you so it’s been agonizingly slow for me. You were right when you said I wanted a submissive.”

“I knew this was too good to be true. I’m going to go now.” She tugged, but his embrace didn’t give. Tears sprang to her eyes. Sitting naked in the tub with the man she craved left her too bare—vulnerable.

“You didn’t let me finish. I want a submissive who will submit to me sexually like you did last night.”

Last night had been incredible for her. “Not all the time?”

“I’ll probably be a tad overprotective at times. It’s the nature of the beast.”

Ruby smirked. “In case you haven’t noticed. I can hold my own when I need to.”

“Bring it on, babe. I relish the challenge.”

No I don’t want this. She could see herself falling in love with him and then where would she be? Way too risky.

“You’re incorrigible. And just looking for a reason to do something crazy like spank me.”

For a moment his lips brushed over her ear. “You say that like it’s a bad thing.”

End of excerpt tease.
